Sardinia is so much more than idyllic beaches and Mediterranean landscapes. Inland, the island is home to a region brimming with small villages, nature trails, traditions and little-known spots that form part of the very essence of Sardinian culture. It was precisely to bring this cultural and scenic richness to visitors that this project was launched: a communication and design initiative for tourist maps aimed at rural guesthouses in inland Sardinia.
The main aim of the project has been to enhance the guests’ experience by offering a useful, visual and accessible tool that allows them to discover the local area in a simple and engaging way. Each map has been designed not only as an informative tool, but also as a graphic element consistent with the identity and character of the rural accommodation for which it was created.
Editorial design and visual communication in the service of rural tourism
The editorial design of these tourist maps combines functionality with aesthetics. The aim was to create a practical resource for visitors, whilst also conveying the character of the rural guesthouses and the island’s welcoming atmosphere.
Each map provides information on walking routes, historic sites, traditional restaurants, outdoor activities and nearby points of interest. It also includes useful recommendations and suggested itineraries to help travellers better organise their trips and make the most of their stay.
The graphic design adopts a minimalist, warm and rustic visual language, inspired by natural materials, traditional Sardinian architecture and the island’s inland landscape. The layout, typography and colours have been carefully selected to reinforce that sense of authenticity and warmth that characterises this type of accommodation.

The value of paper in the digital age
Although we live in a fully digital age, this project deliberately opted for the printed format. The maps were produced on fold-out paper, a medium that remains particularly useful in tourist and rural settings.
Checking information on a mobile phone can be inconvenient during an outing, in areas with poor signal coverage, or simply when seeking a more leisurely and unplugged experience. A physical map allows you to view the area as a whole, plan routes easily and access information immediately, without relying on batteries or connections.
Furthermore, paper provides a tactile and emotional experience that strengthens the bond between the visitor and the place. The map ceases to be merely a functional object and becomes a travel souvenir and an extension of the accommodation’s identity.
A system that can be adapted to different types of rural accommodation
The first map developed as part of this project was created for the Domu Antiga holiday cottage. Building on that initial design concept, a flexible design framework was established, which was subsequently adapted for other rural accommodation providers in Sardinia, such as Mario Cesare, Cortis Antigas, Antica Locanda Lunetta and Il Borgo dell’Arcangelo.
Although all the maps share the same visual and organisational framework, each one was customised to reflect the corporate identity and personality of each establishment. In this way, the project maintains consistency as a communication system, whilst allowing each business to retain its own identity.
This approach facilitates the creation of consistent and recognisable materials, whilst also optimising design and production processes without compromising on customisation.

Much more than just a tourist map
One of the most interesting aspects of this project is that the maps serve as a comprehensive communication tool. They not only help visitors find their way around, but also strengthen the link between the accommodation and the local area.
Guests receive practical information on nearby services, dining recommendations, cultural sites and local activities. This helps to enrich the tourist experience and promotes a more mindful way of travelling that is connected to the local environment.
Furthermore, this type of material helps to highlight small towns and local businesses that are often overlooked by the most popular tourist routes. The maps thus act as a bridge between visitors, heritage and the local community.
A design suitable for a wide range of tourism sectors
Although the project was initially developed for rural guesthouses in Sardinia, its approach can easily be adapted to many other types of businesses involved in tourism and hospitality.
Campsites, boutique hotels, bed and breakfasts, wineries, agritourism establishments, farmhouses or accommodation in natural settings can all benefit from a similar communication tool. Any venue wishing to enhance its guests’ experience and provide clear, engaging information about the local area can incorporate this type of customised map.
In addition to its practical function, this type of design conveys professionalism, attention to detail and a clear commitment to offering a more complete and memorable experience.

Design that connects people and places
This project demonstrates how graphic design and visual communication can go far beyond mere aesthetics. A well-designed map has the power to guide, inspire and foster a deeper connection between people and the places they visit.
In the context of rural tourism, where experience and authenticity are key, having well-designed and consistent communication tools makes a world of difference. These tourist maps for rural holiday homes in Sardinia not only help visitors discover the island, but also help to create lasting memories, experiences and connections with the region.
