Virtual 3D reconstruction of a lost campidanese house: history, science, and technology

The Campidanese house, virtually reconstructed, was located in Villanovafranca, a village in Sardinia (Italy), and dated back to the late 19th century. Demolished in the 1960s, its memory has been preserved through a rigorous process based on testimonies from those who knew it, period photographs, and current plans of its original site.

The reconstruction has been carried out using scientific methods, combining various sources to ensure the highest possible fidelity. Through photogrammetry, digital twins of original objects have been generated, ensuring the authenticity of the elements that made up the house.

The result is a detailed recreation of the environments, furniture, and decorative elements, bringing a piece of Villanovafranca’s heritage back to life. This initiative not only preserves history but also allows exploration, with current digital tools, of a space that would otherwise have been lost forever.

In the virtual reconstruction, several objects present in the house have been recreated. Some, like the millstone, were modelled from photogrammetry of its main piece, while others, like the cart, have been fully digitised using this technique. Other objects were reconstructed after a search for photos and measurements to ensure their realism.
